the product of mono-ai : ‘Aizome Hanten Jacket’
Contemporary Take on the Traditonal Indigo Dyed Hanten Jacket The ‘Indigo Dyed Hanten Jacket’ is a contemporary take on the traditional hanten based on the shape of the tekou (back-of-the-hand) hanten worn by Japanese craftsmen.
Upcycling Unused Indigo Dyed Cotton Fabrics In the process of making the indigo dyed hanten sometimes the color is different from the one ordered. Rather than discarding their unsold leftover cloth these hanten coats are given new patterns. The final product is hand-tailored and washed with the same attention to detail as a more valuable indigo-dyedhantenjackets.
Sustainable Craftsmanship The fabric is dyed with traditional indigo-dyeing and stencil-dyeing techniques, which are under-dyed with ‘go-ire’. Go-ire features a traditional dyeing process in which soybean extract is pressed and mixed with grey before the fabric is again dyed with a brush. Natural materials are used in the processes.
Traditional Japanese Typeface with Bold Designs You may notice the vigorous ‘Edomoji’ written with a thick brush in the traditional typeface handed down from the Edo period (1600s). The rectangular characters are written with only horizontal and vertical lines and the remnants of the crests. Each of them is a one-of-a-kind item.
Unisex Workwear Jacket for All Ages Japanese hand-towel fabric is applied to the back of the sleeves and to the back side, combining various patterns. The back of the sleeves can be folded back to add an accent to the style. The indigo-dyed hanten coats are carefully made by craftsmen one-by-one as unisex models from S-to-XL. Enjoy wearing hanten as you would cardigans and oversized jackets.
