Tanabe Bunzo's wife. Acting kittenish with a headband on, implying she was ill in bed.
Acted by Segawa Kikunojyo III, the greatest male actor in a female role of the period. Putting the hands in the obi belt to act kittenish is a traditional pose of characters that are affected by illness.
The artist behind this ukiyo-e (woodblock print), Toshusai Sharaku, is one of Japan’s greatest mysteries. His short career was only 10-months from the years 1794 and 1795, but during this time he managed to produce about 145 different woodblock prints.
