A native species of Japan, quietly inhabiting forests and satoyama landscapes.
The Japanese raccoon dog (tanuki) belongs to the canid family and is found across Kyushu, Shikoku, and Honshu.
It measures around 40–50 cm in length and weighs between 3–5 kg. Its fur is typically brown, with distinctive black markings around the eyes, ears, and legs.
In winter, its coat becomes thick and full, and its body weight increases—giving it a rounded, almost plump appearance.
Nocturnal and omnivorous, it lives in wooded areas and dense undergrowth near rural settlements.
