The largest member of the canid family.

This wolf was a subspecies of the continental gray wolf once found in Hokkaido.
Most individuals had grey-brown fur, and compared to domestic dogs, their heads were carried lower.

Carnivorous and highly social, wolves lived and hunted in packs through close cooperation.
In general, wolves become larger in size in northern latitudes, and their coats often grow paler during winter.

The Japanese wolf (Nihon Ōkami), which inhabited mainland Japan, was smaller and more brown in color.
Both species became extinct during the Meiji period.
