Well known in Japan as a beloved native bird, the green pheasant is a resident species that prefers open landscapes and is easily recognized by its long, elegant tail.
The male has a deep green body, and during the breeding season its face turns a vivid red as it calls out “keen-keen” to attract females. In 1947, it was officially designated as the national bird of Japan.
For those familiar with European wildlife: although Japan’s green pheasant differs slightly in color from the Common Pheasant widely seen across the Netherlands, they share similar features such as their long tails, ground-dwelling habits, and distinctive calls during mating season.
