TOHAKU is an homage to "The Pine Trees Screen," the national treasure drawn by Tohaku Hasegawa, one of Japan’s most famous painters born in Nanao city.
Tohaku's masterpiece, "Pine Trees Screen," is said to be one of the finest examples of modern ink painting, portraying the beauty of a misty pine forest through varying shades of ink to create different brightness levels. The pine trees in the painting are of the landscape of Nanao City, and he drew them while recollecting his memories of the beautiful nature of his childhood home.
The pine trees of Noto also inspire the shape of the candle. The white powder on the surface of the TOHAKU candle is unique to the HAZE (sumac) wax, evoking the serene and profound atmosphere of the "Pine Trees Screen," which is shrouded in mist.
