Pars pro totem – Tsugi Woodworks
The Pars pro totem series by Tsugi Woodworks transforms traditional wooden joinery into autonomous artworks. The first edition, the Tsugi Table Joint, captures the essence of the larger Tsugi Table in a small, sculptural fragment.
Pars pro totem - Series
A part that reflects the whole and holds meaning in itself
Opening on 27th September
Join us on Sunday, 27 September between 15:00 and 17:00 for the opening of Tsugi Woodworks at our store. Artist Daan Simons will be present to meet visitors and answer questions about his work.
Concept of series
A study exploring traditional wooden joinery to create autonomous pieces of art that represent something greater than themselves. The Tsugi Table Joint is the first (limited) edition of the Pars pro totem series: a unique fragment of the Tsugi Table—a small, autonomous object created by combining multiple joinery elements. Each piece reflects the essence of the original table while holding its own meaning as a standalone work. This work distills the function and beauty of wooden joinery.
About the artist
Daan Simons (1980)
Daan Simons crafts art objects (and functional works) from native solid wood under the name Tsugi. His clean, contemporary designs draw inspiration from ancient Japanese and European wood joining techniques.
These handmade pieces, characterized by their sophisticated wooden joints, are sensual to the touch and invite reflection on life and relationships. His sleek, contemporary designs exude tranquility.
The various wood joints are assembled in such a way that they can move freely with the seasons— as wood contracts in winter and expands in summer. They serve as metaphors for the ideal relationship: supporting themselves, each other, and the whole—bound together in freedom.
