Story of Hanasaka Jiisan (The Old Man Who Made Flowers Bloom)
An old man and woman had a dog named Pochi. One day, Pochi barked, “Dig here, woof-woof!” When they dug the spot, they discovered a treasure of gold coins.
Their jealous neighbors tried to gain the same fortune by using Pochi, but when things did not go as they wished, they killed the dog out of spite.
After Pochi’s death, the old couple planted a cherry tree over his grave. The ashes from the tree were said to have a mysterious power—to make even withered trees burst into bloom.
Moved by the beauty of the blossoms, a feudal lord rewarded the couple for their miracle.
