The Story of Saru Kani Gassen (The Monkey and the Crab)
In this well-known folktale, a crab is deceived by a monkey and trades its rice ball for a persimmon seed.
The crab plants the seed, and it grows into a large tree bearing abundant fruit. However, the monkey, jealous upon seeing the ripened persimmons, throws unripe, hard fruit at the crab, fatally injuring it.
The orphaned young crabs, with the help of allies such as chestnuts, bees, cow dung, and a mortar—each of whom had suffered at the hands of the monkey—ultimately defeat the monkey and avenge their parent.
