Hitotsu = one, me = eye, kozō = boy. As the name suggests, this yokai appears as a child with only a single eye. It is not known to cause serious harm; rather, it is a mischievous spirit that startles people by suddenly turning around on dark roads. In Kyoto’s Mount Hiei, there are tales of it appearing before monks who neglected their training and spent their time idly, serving as a warning to mend their ways.
