During the day, it appears as a human, but at night, its neck stretches out. There are various theories, but it is said that the state of human astral projection resembles a rokurokubi. During the Edo period, there was a popular ghost story that when guests had fallen asleep, courtesans would stretch their necks and lick the oil from the lanterns.
This fan is made using the “sashi-bata” technique, where the handle is inserted into the “uchiwa-men” (fan face) that creates a breeze. Using Japanese paper in various colors that blend into the darkness, I have depicted Japanese ghosts. Golden paper is applied around the eyes to give them a gleaming effect. This fan can be used as an accompaniment to summer festivals or as decoration.
