Ceramics, especially tableware, have long played a role in bringing colour and beauty into our everyday lives.

Mino ware comes from Mino, Japan’s largest ceramic-producing region. Behind its many kilns is a rich network of specialised craftspeople and industries, each contributing their own skills to the making of ceramics.

For 150 years, Shinzan-gama Yamatsu Co., Ltd. has been one of these supporting actors.

Working alongside the many people who make up the Mino ware community, Yamatsu continues to take care of the small details that bring a little more happiness to everyday life — in homes across Japan and around the world.

And so, day after day, they keep firing that care into their kiln.

Frustum Series

The Frustum is a contemporary tea ware collection inspired by the traditional forms of Japanese tea utensils.

The collection received the Red Dot Design Award 2020, one of Germany’s most prestigious international design awards.

The distinctive edge that runs around the middle of the teapot echoes a form traditionally found in Japanese iron kettles, giving the pieces a strong visual connection to tea culture. At the same time, Yamatsu re-examined every detail — even the shape of the spout — to create a collection that feels at home in contemporary life.

Rather than simply preserving traditional forms, Frustum explores how they can evolve. As our way of living changes, so too can the way we experience tea.

Rooted in tradition, Frustum is a new way of experiencing Japanese tea in contemporary life.
