MONO JAPAN 2019
Next February, MONO JAPAN will hold its largest-ever event, with 27 exhibitors taking over the Lloyd Hotel to fill it with beautiful products designed and crafted in Japan. As every year, there’ll be clothing, furniture, jewelry, ceramics, kitchenware and lifestyle goods. The only difference this year is that there’ll be more of it!
The theme for MONO JAPAN 2019, the fourth event we’ve held, is GET INVOLVED. Much more than just an exhibition where you’re merely viewing things from a distance, this year we’ve developed a special programme to offer more opportunities to encounter, select, use and promote Japanese craftsmanship. Some of the programmes are already up on the website, and the rest will be added in the coming months. We invite you to get involved and be involved!
Also, for the first time, we’ll also have a satellite venue. This will be at Time & Style, the elegant Japanese furniture and interior store on Marnixstraat that everyone’s raving about. There will be some different exhibitors at Time & Style which are well worth catching, in addition to their stunning interior products and bonsai collection.
There’ll be a chance to enjoy some MONO JAPAN products early this year, too, with a pop-up store called JAPAN XXI SHIP in Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) in Amsterdam that are showing products from mujun, orit. and other Japanese makers from 6—11 Nov. And, if you’re in or near Essen in Germany, there’s another pop-up store featuring mujun, orit. and others between 14—24 November at Yes. Store.
We’re also launching an exciting Artist in Residence programme this year. The winning three applicants will be sent to stay with three different craftspeople across Japan working in lacquerware, Japanese paper, and textiles, with whom they will collaborate to create a new product. We are putting out an open call from Nov 1—Dec 31st 2018. Tell your friends, or enter yourself!
Finally, there’s an opportunity to taste two contrasting sides of Japanese culture, with a combi ticket we are introducing for MONO JAPAN and the COOL JAPAN exhibition at the Tropenmuseum Amsterdam. The COOL JAPAN exhibition shows how Japanese culture has captivated the world, from Hello Kitty to samurai, manga, horror films and kawaii (cute) fashion on the streets on Tokyo. There are some gorgeous old wood-cut prints as well. And some of the suits produced in our MONO JAPAN x Bonne Suits collaboration are also exhibited. To celebrate that, we’re offering the entrance to MONO JAPAN and 50% off the entrance to the Tropenmuseum during the weekend of 1-3 February 2019, which includes some special Japanese culture events at the museum.
So many exciting things to look forward to! We updated our website today, so please go and take a look at some of the exhibitors who are coming, as well as some of the programme that has already been confirmed. There’s more exhibitors, events, and surprises to come, so please keep an eye on our social media accounts for those!
