Aya Tokushima

A Thought on Making

Aya Tokushima's ceramics are shaped by her ongoing exploration of the relationship between food, vessels, and everyday life.

Through making ceramics, cooking, and using both her own work and pieces by other ceramic artists, she has come to appreciate the organic character of handmade vessels. Just as the ingredients we eat come from the earth and living beings, she feels that the vessels holding them should carry a sense of life in their own right, with forms and surfaces that feel natural rather than perfectly uniform.

For Aya, beauty often lies in subtle variations and irregularities. At the same time, a vessel is a part of everyday life, and its usefulness matters just as much as its appearance. She seeks a balance between organic expression and practicality, creating pieces that feel natural to use and become part of the rhythms of daily living.

About Aya Tokushima

Born and raised in Saga, Japan, a region renowned for Arita ware, Aya Tokushima studied porcelain after graduating from an art university before launching her own tableware brand. Her work grew from a desire to create objects that feel close to people and everyday life.

Aya believes that choosing the things we use every day is a small but meaningful expression of our own will. Since moving to the Netherlands in late 2025, she has been exploring new materials and ways of working, continuing to create pieces that she hopes will find a natural place in people's daily lives.
