About 25 to 30 cm long. They tap on tree trunks with a sharp sturdy beak and listen to the sounds, which points them to where to make holes while hunting for insects. They have sharp claws to vertically cling on to trunks, and stiff tail feathers for balance. They dig their nests in tree trunks. Males have redhead tops.
