Kohiki is one of the decorative techniques in ceramics and is also called “kesho” (meaning “makeup”). It involves applying a layer of white slip (liquid clay) over the surface of the clay body. Originally, this technique was used to make darker-colored clay appear white.
By layering the natural color of the clay, the white slip, and the glaze, you can enjoy different colors and textures, as well as iron spots and variations on the surface.
The surface contains fine crackles, and with each use, the color and overall character gradually change. Depending on how it is used, each piece develops uniquely over time—this is one of the key charms of kohiki ware.
