This yunomi is generously coated with Shino glaze, one of the distinctive characteristics of Mino ware. Deidei’s interpretation of Shino is particularly unique, featuring a softly rounded, pinkish tone that feels both charming and contemporary.
During the glazing process, areas where the glaze has been partially wiped away reveal the clay body beneath, allowing the distinctive reddish tone of Mogusa clay to emerge as a subtle accent.
With daily use, the texture and appearance will gradually evolve, offering a unique enjoyment over time.
Shino
Shino glaze is made using feldspar and fired over a long period, resulting in its distinctive soft pink tones and textured surfaces known as kairagi (a blistered or crackled effect).
No pigments are used. Although the clay body is originally white, during prolonged reduction firing followed by slow cooling, trace amounts of iron in the Mogusa clay react strongly and oxidize, producing a reddish tone. As the white Shino glaze is slightly translucent, this underlying red hue appears through the surface, giving the piece its characteristic soft pink appearance.
