Tiger is an auspicious animal that runs a thousand miles in a day, returning with good fortune and is considered a talisman of courage because of its keen eyes and swift movements. It was also appreciated as a talisman for the growth of children because of its maternal nature. At Kuramadera Temple (鞍馬寺) in Kyoto, the guardian tiger guards the main hall and is considered to be a messenger of Bishamonten (毘沙門天).

The paper mache tiger is prayed at Manzoku Inari Shrine in Higashiyama, Kyoto.
