Studio Chikufusha

Studio CHIKUFUSHA was established in 2005 by Kenichi Otani who worked under Masataka Yufu, an accredited master artisan of Beppu Bamboo Crafts in Japan. With the aim to let the user feel the warmth of the maker's hands, Studio CHIKUFUSHA produces craft items such as bamboo plates and hand baskets for daily use. Experimenting with and using local Madake (giant timber bamboo), the studio creates new items that bring simple pleasures to your daily life.

About the Products

Studio CHIKUFUSHA will show traditionally braided and handwoven bamboo baskets for your everyday life. Everything, from the processing of the raw bamboo material to the weaving, is done by hand using techniques handed down over many centuries.

Bamboo

The main characteristic of bamboo is that it has knots and bends. It has a structure like a lump of fibres and is very different from wood.

Bamboo baskets can be washed with water, but it is important to be aware that they are knitted. If moisture remains where the bamboos intersect, it will cause mould, so dry it properly. Good condition is maintained by washing with a scrubbing brush, wiping it with a dry cloth, drying it, placing it in a place where there is airflow even after drying, and not storing it in a closed place.
