The Tuna ''maguro'' has been an important food source in Japan since way back in the Jomon period about 10,000 years ago. In the past, these big, 3 m long fish was called ''Shibi''. There are many kinds of tuna in the waters near Japan, such as the Bluefin tuna, the yellowfin tuna, the big eye tuna, the albacore tuna, and the long-tailed tuna. About 90% of the Tuna in Japan is eaten raw as they are very popular for use as sashimi or in sushi.
