The Story of Akoya Pearls — An Evening with Acoya

Friday, 13 November 2026 · 18:00–18:45
MONO JAPAN STORE, Rotterdam

What is a real pearl?

We often think of pearls simply as beautiful jewellery. But behind every pearl is a story of the sea, a living oyster, skilled hands and years of patient cultivation.

On Friday, 13 November, we welcome Chitose Ohchi, founder and artist of Acoya, for an intimate talk about the fascinating world of Akoya pearls.

For around 30 minutes, Chitose will take us on a journey through the history and culture of pearls in Japan and around the world, the development of modern Akoya pearl cultivation, and the process through which a pearl is nurtured in the sea.

She will also share the story behind Acoya and the pearls she works with — pearls cultivated in the waters of Japan.

For Chitose, a pearl is more than a beautiful object. It is the result of a relationship between the oyster, the sea, nature and the people who care for it.

This evening is an opportunity to discover Akoya pearls from a different perspective, learn more about their history and cultivation, and get to know the story, ideas and craftsmanship behind Acoya's jewellery.

Whether you already love pearls or know very little about them, we invite you to join us for an evening of knowledge, stories and beauty.

About Chitose Ohchi & Acoya

Chitose Ohchi is the founder and artist behind Acoya, a jewellery brand working with Akoya pearls cultivated in the waters of Japan.

Through her work, she explores the natural beauty and individuality of pearls, creating pieces that connect the material itself with the story of the sea and the people who nurture it.

This evening offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from the person behind the brand and to discover the world of Akoya pearls through her eyes.
