Sumac wax is a rare natural material, and its fruit can only be harvested in East Asia, including Japan.
DAIYO’s Japanese candles are crafted one by one with great care by skilled artisans using only 100% natural materials. It is said that there are only about ten traditional candle-making craftsmen left in Japan.
The wicks of Japanese candles are hollow and made from washi paper, rush weeds, and silk threads. First, the washi paper is rolled, then wrapped with rush weeds, and finally secured with silk thread.
Blocks of sumac wax are melted in a pot, and the artisan uses a special bamboo tool in the left hand while rotating the wick—into which a glass fiber stick has been inserted—with the right hand, layering the molten wax onto the wick again and again.
Once shaped, the candles are dried and the process is repeated many times until the desired length and thickness is achieved.
Thanks to their unique structure and traditional production methods, Japanese candles burn with a larger and more stable flame than typical Western candles. Because only natural ingredients are used, they produce very little smoke or odor when extinguished, making them a clean and environmentally friendly option.
