"Onoe Kikugorō as Edo Hiyō" by Tōshūsai Sharaku In the kabuki play "Koi Nyōbō Somewake Tazuna," the character Edo Hiyō is a bandit leader who is asked by Washizuka Hachihei to attack and rob a man named Ippō on the banks of the Shijō River. The scene captures him striking a pose, hands outstretched, as he intimidates Ippō. His unshaven head and red kumadori makeup accentuating his eyes are prominently featured.
